From Detroit, go southwest along I-94 to St. Joseph

Heading West from M-60 & M-62

Heading west along M-60 takes you through the countryside and Cassopolis and Dowagiac. Whether you're looking for fresh produce or a glimpse into the area's rich Underground Railroad history, here are some great places to explore:

Dr. T.K. Lawless Park: Hike, fish or play disc golf in this expansive nature park. It is one of Michigan’s International Dark Sky Parks and offers incredible stargazing.

The James E. Bonine House: Explore the architectural beauty and rich history of this landmark home with connections to the Underground Railroad.

Heading Northeast from Chicago on I-94

Driving along I-94 from New Buffalo to St. Joseph takes you through the friendly communities of Bridgman, Sawyer and Stevensville, rolling farmland, dunes, vineyards and orchards. Along the way, you'll see signs for local wineries and distilleries, farm markets, bakeries and hidden gems just off the highway, perfect for a quick stop or a memorable detour. Here are some great places to check out along the route:

Grand Mere State Park: Less crowded than other beaches, you will love its dunes, pristine beach and tranquil hiking trails.

Peat's Cider Social: Enjoy craft hard ciders and nostalgic fun in a restored 1960s bowling alley.

Lookout Park: Pull off the road and be awed by the breathtaking beauty of Lake Michigan — you may even see a Great Lakes freighter or tall ship in the distance. This is a top pick for picnicking and sunset or star watching. 

Silver Beach Pizza: Repeatedly named the “Best Pizzeria” by locals and visitors, this place attracts families and friends alike. Adjacent to the Amtrak station, you can watch freight and passenger trains come and go within feet of your table or look beyond at Lake Michigan. Heading north along US-31 from Buchanan and Niles to St. Joseph takes you through a landscape scattered with farm markets, orchards, vineyards, historic sites and off-the-beaten-path nature spots.
