Sarett Nature Center | Visit Southwest Michigan

An aerial view of visitors enjoying the overlook boardwalk as it winds through the treetops at Sarett Nature Center.

Just north of Benton Harbor, Sarett Nature Center offers one of Southwest Michigan’s most peaceful natural escapes. With over 1,000 acres of protected land and eight miles of scenic trails, it’s a year-round destination for families, hikers, birders and outdoor lovers. The landscape shifts from marshes and floodplains to upland forests and the bluffs above the Paw Paw River. Boardwalks and observation platforms let you experience wetlands, fens and other sensitive habitats up close. One of the standout features is the tree top walkway, which stretches above the forest floor and offers an unforgettable view — especially in autumn when the canopy glows with vibrant color.

Sarett also keeps accessibility in focus. Guests can reserve a rugged, electric-powered vehicle or a balloon-tired wagon to explore with ease, even during light snow. Each season brings new discoveries: wildflowers and birds in spring, butterflies in summer, fiery foliage in fall and quiet, snow-covered paths in winter. Trails are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow. Inside the Nature Center building, guests of all ages can enjoy live reptiles, amphibians and birds, as well as interactive exhibits that bring Southwest Michigan’s ecosystems to life. From environmental education to seasonal programs, Sarett is a place to gather, learn and explore.
