Explore Southwest Michigan’s Great Outdoors
Need a break from the daily grind? You don’t have to travel thousands of miles to rejuvenate in some of the most beautiful outdoors in America. Our beaches, trails, county and community parks turn an ordinary day into a spectacular one for little to no money. Here are a few favorites:
Warren Dunes State Park (Sawyer) – Fifteen miles south of St. Joseph, Warren Dunes State Park is a must-visit. The dunes in this nearly 2,000-acre Lake Michigan park will blow you away. Seasonally, fill your day hiking the towering dunes and wooded trails, swimming, paddling, hang-gliding, sand surfing, snowboarding, sledding or just soaking up the sun’s rays. The top of a 240-foot dune is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of Chicago — approximately 52 miles away — or be awed by an unforgettable Lake Michigan sunset. Entry to the park requires an annual Michigan Recreational Passport or day pass.
Grand Mere State Park (Stevensville) – Want to avoid crowds and thoroughly enjoy peaceful solitude? Just a short drive from Warren Dunes is Grand Mere State Park, an often-overlooked gem perfect for nature lovers and silence seekers. This National Natural Landmark is a popular destination for birdwatchers and has a four-mile hiking trail loop with a paved section that is wheelchair accessible. For the most strenuous hike, take the Baldtop Loop around Grand Mere’s tallest dune. The reward of this hard-earned thrill is the dune-top view and letting gravity take over your sprint back down! You will need an annual Michigan Recreational Passport or day pass to enter.
Rocky Gap County Park (Benton Harbor) – Perched on a bluff in Benton Township, Rocky Gap County Park offers two levels of natural wonder along its 1,100 feet of Lake Michigan frontage. The upper park features panoramic views from its overlook deck and the small beach below is ideal for building sandcastles, rock hounding, hunting for beach glass, family picnics, and sunset watching. A hard-surface ramp ensures accessibility for wheelchairs, strollers, and wagons. Amenities include picnic tables, vault restrooms, and a pergola. Park entry is free.
Free Hiking Trails
- Galien River County Park (New Buffalo Township) — The 300-foot canopy walk leads to a 60-foot-high platform with stunning views of the marshland, Galien River, and wildlife. You can also follow the boardwalk down to the fishing platform by the water. Open in the spring, summer and fall.
- McCoy Creek Trail (Buchanan) — This trail, including loops, is four miles one way. Besides hiking and biking, you’ll find exercise stations, fishing spots, and a popular Duck Pond — perfect for picnicking and watching the ducks.
- John & Dede Howard Family Recreational Trail (St. Joseph) — This scenic waterfront trail starts at Lions Park Beach, continues along Silver Beach, and ends at Upton Arboretum along the St. Joseph River.
- Harbor Shores Nature & Fitness Trails (Benton Harbor) — These 12 miles of paved hiking and biking trails through the Harbor Shores Golf Course take you along the picturesque Paw Paw River, Ox Creek, and the St. Joseph River, across wetlands and up the dunes for a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan.
Earn Prizes by Doing Fun Challenges
If you love trying new things when you travel, we have created four fun challenges to take you around Southwest Michigan. The more places you visit, the more prizes you can earn. Some sites qualify for more than one challenge so you can complete multiple challenges faster.
Start with these two free to low-cost outdoor challenges:
Murals Challenge — Throughout our communities, artists have turned to building walls and streets into canvases to tell our colorful local stories — some are whimsical, others historical, inspirational, or puzzling. They beg you to stand before them and take a photo — exactly what we hope you do! The first 100 participants to complete the challenge will earn two prizes.
Southwest Michigan Trails Challenge — Burn calories hiking, biking, paddling, fat tire biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or snowmobiling on our designated trails. If you are among the first 100 people to complete the challenge, you will collect two prizes and be ready to do the challenge again next year.
Attend Affordable Cultural Experiences
Southwest Michigan is rich in history and culture and there are several ways to experience much of it on a budget. Like the Murals and Trails Challenges, the Creative Connections Challenge offers you the chance to earn exciting prizes. The more local art galleries, museums, theater performances, concerts, and cultural attractions you attend, the more stamps you will collect toward valuable rewards. Most of the sites listed below qualify for the challenge:
ARS Gallery, Arts & Culture Center (Benton Harbor) – Enter Southwest Michigan’s contemporary art scene at the ARS Gallery in the bohemian-vibe Benton Harbor Arts District. It hosts rotating exhibitions featuring regional and national artists mixed with classes and cultural events such as international food, wine, and art happenings.
Box Factory for the Arts (St. Joseph) – Head down the Broad Street hill to the Box Factory for the Arts. Be inspired by its art exhibitions, gallery shows, working artist studios, live performances, classes, and workshops.
Heddon Museum (Dowagiac) – If you love fishing, don’t miss spending time at the Heddon Museum. You will have a whole new respect for the making of fishing lures, reels, rods, and tackle — see highly sought-after collector lures — and be amazed by the intricate designs.
Krasl Art Center (St. Joseph) – The Krasl Art Center offers year-round indoor contemporary art exhibitions and an extensive collection of outdoor sculptures at no cost (although donations are appreciated). Talented artists teach classes and workshops for children, teens, and adults. Its signature event is the annual Krasl Art Fair held in Lake Bluff Park each summer. Each July, artists from across the country compete for coveted booth spots in this juried show.
North Berrien Historical Museum (Coloma) – The North Berrien Historical Museum is one of the best places to learn about this area’s past. Exhibits cover 10,000 years of human history, including Native Americans, lake resorts, rural schools, resident life, farming, and businesses.
Silver Beach Carousel (St. Joseph) – Don’t let the word “carousel” fool you into thinking this is a kids-only destination. Far from it! All ages (and abilities) will make some of their happiest memories in the Carousel House. Choose your favorite figure from 48 hand-carved and painted horses and animals and two chariots, then whirl under 1,000 twinkling lights while the most uplifting music plays. The rides require tokens, but there are many free activities, back-in-the-day displays, and seasonal special events to entertain everyone. The Carousel is open every month except January.
