Our Story: A Passion for Southwest Michigan Wine

Our journey into the world of Southwest Michigan wine began in 2024. After attending a OneRepublic concert in Grand Rapids, we decided to take the scenic route home and taste local Michigan shore wines for the very first time. Our very first stop on that road trip was the historic Karma Vista.

We spent that afternoon tasting nearly every style offered, moving from crisp, vibrant white wines to complex, rich red wines. As the server poured each selection into our tasting glasses, he shared deep insights into the local winemaking process. His knowledge, raw excitement, and pure passion for the craft were intoxicating—we stood there soaking it all in like children listening to a favorite story. We watched the owners share their favorite vintages with wide smiles, their love for the land evident in the meticulous, beautiful condition of the property.

We left that day with a half-case of wine, a head full of new knowledge, and a shared realization: “Wow, Michigan wine is incredible!” That single visit became our gateway into the thriving Lake Michigan Shore AVA wine scene, and it inspired us to build a winery that could recreate that same magical experience for others.

Our deep passion for food and wine pairings actually dates back many years prior. Having both worked extensively in the restaurant industry, we developed an early understanding of flavor profiles and hospitality. Back then, the culinary scene was experiencing a major movement toward intentional wine pairings. We quickly found ourselves hosting elaborate pairing dinner parties for our friends, constantly exploring how regional ingredients could elevate a great bottle of wine. Today, we bring that same dedication to hospitality, flavor, and community to every guest who steps onto the beautiful grounds of Filkins Vineyards.
