Presentation on Remedios Varo by RoseAnna Mueller, Phd at Roti Roti

RoseAnna Mueller, Ph.D. will present “Remedios Varo in Chicago: Magic and Science Fiction” which features paintings by the Spanish-Mexican Surrealist Artist, Remedios Varo (1908-1963.) Varo is considered one of the most individual and extraordinary Mexican painters. She has had an enduring influence on subsequent artists. Above all, she paved the way for other women artists in Mexico.

We will explore Remedios Varo’s works currently at the Art Institute of Chicago, reviewing "Inside the Exhibition: The Dueling Dualities of Remedios Varo” and focusing on some of her representative works depicting a world between fantasy and reality, dreams and the unconscious, and making invisible emotions visible.

Remedios Varo’s works were shown at the Mexican Fine Arts Museum, “The Magic of Remedios Varo." And this fall, her works are being offered at the Art Institute of Chicago, “Remedios Varo: Science Fiction.” In addition, her works were exhibited in San Francisco and can be found in private collections and in Mexican museums and galleries. In the U.S. her works are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
