The Galien Woods Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the Galien Woods area in the southwest corner of Michigan, near the Indiana border. Both Berrien and Cass counties land within the small wilderness area. The Historical Society was founded in 1995 by a group of local residents who wanted to ensure that its rich history was not forgotten. The Society operates a museum in the nearby town of New Troy, which houses a collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, and other items related to the history of the area. Learn about the Native American tribes that once inhabited the area, the early pioneers and settlers, and the agricultural and industrial history of Galien. The museum also features a replica of a pioneer cabin, complete with period furnishings and tools, and a restored 1870s one-room schoolhouse. The Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter that highlights local history and events. Overall, the Galien Woods Historical Society is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the Galien Woods area and its people. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing our history and heritage for future generations.
