Galien River Marsh Preserves
The 154-acre Galien River Marsh Preserves, consisting of Louis J. Sima Great Lakes Marsh Preserve and Merganser Point Preserve, protect a significant portion of the Galien River Marsh in New Buffalo. Best explored by boat or kayak, the preserves encompass a Great Lakes coastal marsh, a highly diverse wetland ecosystem whose water levels are closely influenced by Lake Michigan. The marsh provides important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including more than 140 bird species, as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and several threatened plant species.
