Castle Keep Preserve

This 27-acre preserve features three distinct habitats: restored prairie, floodplain forest, and mesic southern forest. A former agricultural field is being transformed into native prairie, while surrounding wooded ravines contain a creek that flows toward the South Branch of the Galien River. The frequently flooded ravine bottoms support plants adapted to wet conditions, while the upland forests feature large beech, oak, and maple trees. About three-quarters of a mile of natural-surface trails allow visitors to explore the preserve and see mature trees and impressive root systems that remain from portions of the forest spared from historic logging.
