Roti Roti Art Center presents the Izard + Shelton Exhibition.
Izard + Shelton Exhibition features not only a selection of their respective exceptional artworks but also a sculpture where they collaborated called House of Izwin.
A handmade plywood dollhouse was rescued from the garbage by Edwin Shelton.
He gave it his funky camouflage treatment to the surface. Laurel Izard created the stuffed fabric figures that occupy this whimsical structure. Edwin cannibalized some older sculptures to fabricate the base.
This eccentric sculpture was the first time they worked together since their ceramic objects business called Izwin (that ended about 2002). Examples of their Izwin ceramics can often be found on eBay. Laurel Izard and Edwin Shelton met while working on their Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Wisconsin. They married in 1980. Izard and Shelton designed, marketed, and fabricated a collection of whimsical Christmas ornaments, jewelry, and dinnerware for about 20 years. They reinvented themselves in their 40's which provided additional adventures. They settled in Michigan City about 30 years ago.
Laurel Izard recently made a series of stuffed stylized figures for the gallery walls. They are given names that sometimes reflect their respective personalities. She also included 10 embroideries based on the Tarot cards. The display cases show the rich sketchbooks that Izard also made. She also designed and sewn quilts with social justice and environmental awareness themes that have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Edwin Shelton's assemblages range in scale from non-representational pieces on pedestals to three free-standing sculptures. He transforms discarded objects. The assemblages are enhanced with painted fabric surfaces. Faux fur, glitter, fake gems, paper mache, etc are utilized. Shelton blends mystery and kitsch with a sense of joy.

The exhibition will run from September 25 through November 2, 2024.
The opening reception will be Sunday, September 29 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm (EST). Viewers will hopefully enjoy discovering the differences and similarities with their artworks.
Laurel Izard and Edwin Shelton have supported each other on many levels for over 4 decades.
This exhibition contains a sense of celebration that viewers will likely experience.
