State Of Progression Mural
Corner of Water and West Main Streets, Benton Harbor
In 1997, Marcus Akinlana painted an unfinished mural called "State of Progression". Akinlana created this mural to bring positivity to Benton Harbor, Michigan, a city with a high murder rate and struggles with corruption, racism, and poverty. Although the mural was meant to increase community involvement, it faced challenges due to the conflicts within the community. Akinlana had to deal with opposition and even threats to his family while working on the mural.
Despite its unfinished state, "State of Progression" serves as a powerful reminder of the difficulties of creating revolutionary works of art.
