Getaway Grille and Cubbie Bar
In 1983, the Ackerman family bought the rights to a “biker bar” located on Red Arrow Highway in Bridgman, Michigan. It was the beginning of a new era dominated by Cubs Fans and a Chicago-style menu.
It just seemed logical that Tom Ackerman (now co-owner along with his mom Sanae) would begin to decorate the bar with Cubs memorabilia; after all, Tom worked as a scout for the Cubs in the late 1990s. Ackerman was also the head baseball coach at Lake Michigan College and for the St. Joseph American Legion baseball team.
Dubbed “The Other Wrigley Field” by a local journalist, the Getaway Grille and Cubbie Bar in Bridgman, Michigan, will make any Cubs fan feel right at home. If you aren’t going to the game, this is the next best place to be!
Start your visit by taking some selfies outside the bar: against the ivy-covered walls, beneath the scoreboard, beside the replica of the infamous Billy Goat, or with a cardboard cutout of a Cubs star. Then head inside for Cubs memorabilia tucked into every nook and cranny (even the men’s room). You’ll find plenty of Cubs jerseys, pennants, and signs that show the unflappable humor of die-hard fans back when the Cubs were still the Lovable Losers.
Featuring 15 surround sound televisions, the Getaway is much more than another sports bar.
We are a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant and bar that is “all in” with the Cubs theme. You will see our wait staff using baseball signals to order your drinks, and when they sing “Happy Birthday” to you, it’s to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Take your time enjoying our menu featuring munchies, sandwiches, burgers and salads named after Cubs players, or dive right into one of our delicious “Try Not to Suck” dinners.
While we revel in our Cubs devotion every day of the week, game days are an especially great time to join us. You will appreciate the specials on food and drinks as well as giveaways, live music, special guests, and more. Wear your favorite Cubs shirt and help us celebrate. We’ve ended our 108-year losing streak and 71-year-old Billy Goat curse. We’re here to have fun because (like Joe Maddon says) we “do simple better.”
The Ackerman’s changed the name of the bar to signal its transformation to a Chicago Cubs bar and restaurant. Enjoy the Getaway Grille & Cubbie Bar!
With a menu that’s just plain fun to read, the Getaway now sells more food than drinks. Why? Our food is homemade, featuring such favorites as roasted Prime Rib, BBQ ribs, and hand-dipped onion rings and mushrooms. The Italian Beef will make you think you’re in Wrigleyville.
A favorite gathering spot for both locals and Cubs fans from Chicago and elsewhere, young and old alike will find delicious food, great team spirit, and lots of fun at the Getaway Grille and Cubbie Bar.
