Brammall Supply Company Mural
A Glimpse into Benton Harbor's History
The Brammall Supply Mural, titled "Time Bridge Blossoms," is a vibrant tribute to Benton Harbor's rich history. Created in 2005 by local artist Tony Hendrick, the mural was initially painted directly onto the building's stucco siding. With support from the community and the Kellogg Foundation, the mural was conceived by the New Territory Arts Association.
However, over time, the mural began to fade. Thanks to the generosity of Brammall Supply and the Ankli Family, Mr. Hendrick was able to restore it to its original glory in 2012.
The mural showcases key moments in Benton Harbor's development. In the mid-19th century, the region became a prominent fruit-growing area, with bountiful harvests shipped to Midwestern communities via a newly dredged ship canal. This success attracted tourists, contributing to a thriving local economy.
By the 1940s, Benton Harbor boasted the largest "cash-to-growers" market in the country, serving restaurants, grocery stores, and retail customers. As the century progressed, heavy industry, such as foundries, began to emerge near the waterfront.
Brammall Supply Company, founded in 1873, played a significant role in the city's growth. Initially focused on farm implements, the company adapted to serve local industries as they evolved. Today, celebrating its 150th anniversary, Brammall Supply remains a vital part of the community.
