The Northern Indiana Pastel Society(NIPS) exhibit features over twenty artists’ work in the exhibit, “Pastel Kaleidoscope” in the Fehlner Family Gallery. The group’s purpose is to stimulate interest in pastels as a fine art medium and we think viewers will agree – their beautiful work in soft pastels, a medium that has been used since the 1500s, definitely meets that goal. Some of the artists create with soft pastels, while others prefer oil pastels, to create a variety of images including landscapes, studies in nature, portraits, and more. The colors are luscious, the pigments are pure and the medium itself is fascinating.
This dedicated group was founded in 2006 in South Bend, IN, and includes members from Indiana and Michigan. Many of the members have won awards in regional and national exhibits; several are teachers at art centers, museums, high schools, and colleges. NIPS members meet regularly, communicate through newsletters, and exhibit several times a year – they are a great example of why a society forms – to support a collective vision while supporting the individual’s creativity. nipastelsociety.org
Photographer Dave Coulston provides colorful visual insights into his “Glimpses of Berrien County” exhibition that will be on display at RRAC’s Hess Library Gallery. Coulston, who grew up in Niles, Michigan, recalls that his high school art teacher impressed upon him, “It’s knowledge and experience (rather than the photographic equipment) that matters” in his art expression. Coulston has applied that lesson to a lifetime of photographic works. Coulston’s pastoral works have found homes in diverse settings in the area including healthcare facilities, Michigan legislative offices, and regional calendars.
