Your Guide to Enjoying the St. Joseph Winter Beer Fest

Beer-Fest-2024

With the St. Joseph Winter Beer Fest just around the corner, here are some tips to help you have the best experience at the event:

Spice Up the Friday Before Winter Beer Fest

Kick off your Winter Beer Fest Weekend at the annual Chili Tour in downtown St. Joseph. Sample over two dozen delicious chili recipes all vying for your vote. Purchase a $5 map (your admission ticket and ballot) at the St. Joseph Today Welcome Center on State Street or The Market on Main Street. A portion of your map purchase helps support the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen and brings warmth to the community in more ways than one. See you there!

Before Attending the Festival

Plan Your Transportation

The most important consideration is how you'll get home safely. Designate a sober driver who won't drink alcohol by arranging for a friend or family member to pick you up or hiring a ride service. If you're traveling from out of town, consider exploring the excellent lodging options nearby to turn the event into a weekend getaway.

Dress for Warmth and Comfort

This outdoor event calls for layers to keep you comfortable and warm. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes or boots, and don't forget essentials like a hat, gloves, hand warmers, and a weather-appropriate coat to stay cozy throughout the day.

Keep Track of Your Favorites

Bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down notes about the beers you try. This will help you remember which brews you enjoyed when the event ends.

Fuel Up Before the Fun

Start your day with a hearty meal to avoid drinking on an empty stomach, which can quickly turn your fun day into a short and unpleasant one. Avoid pre-drinking to stay fresh for the event itself.

Some recommendations: Caffe Tosi, Thornton’s Home Town Cafe, The Copper Pot and Dad’s Farm and Cafe. Or, take a short drive to Mason Jar Cafe.

Snack Strategically

There will be food vendors and food trucks onsite at the event, offering a variety of options to satisfy your hunger. You may not bring in outside food, however,  snack necklaces made of pretzels, cheese and meat sticks are allowed for convenient, quick bites throughout the day. Pretzels, in particular, are a popular choice as they help refresh your palate between tastings.

Stay Hydrated

Stay refreshed and energized. Keep sipping water between trying beers. Water is available for purchase from the vendors.

Be Adventurous

Keep an open mind and try beers outside your usual preferences. Even if you typically avoid certain styles, you may find a new favorite among the creative brews. If you don’t enjoy a taste, move on to the next sample.

Make It Social

Enjoy the experience with friends and take the opportunity to meet new people. Discuss the beers, learn about the breweries and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Etiquette: Keep It Fun for Everyone

Beer festivals are all about enjoying great brews and good company! Once you’ve grabbed your sample, step aside to let others in line, and always treat the staff and volunteers with patience and kindness. Help keep the event clean by using the trash bins provided. Small acts of courtesy can make the festival enjoyable for everyone!

Explore Downtown St. Joseph

There’s no need to rush home after the event. Explore the local shops, restaurants, and coffee spots in St. Joseph to make the most of your visit.
